Several arrested, sentenced for selling, buying spy equipment in Ukraine

A Sevastopol resident has been sentenced to four years in prison suspended for two years for selling devices for obtaining information surreptitiously, the Ukrainian website Korrespondent reported on 27 July, quoting the Sevastopol prosecutor's office. In 2010-11 he illegally purchased miniature devices for photo and video recording shaped as key chains, as well as GSM transmitters, over the Internet from Hong Kong and received them at the local post office. The devices were meant for resale. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in January arrested a Kiev resident for illegal wiretapping with the use of special devices, the website added. In Zhytomyr Region, the SBU opened two criminal cases over illegal sale and one over illegal purchase of devices for surreptitious obtaining of information, the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN reported on 27 July, quoting the regional SBU press group. As many as 18 such devices were seized by law-enforcement bodies from two people, who had them for sale. The two devices purchased by a man in the town of Malyn could be used to secretely record photo, video and audio. The Feodosiya city court in Crimea passed suspended four and four-and-a-half jail sentences on two officers of Russia's Black Sea Fleet for illegally buying and attempting to utilize wiretapping devices, UNIAN reported on 29 July, quoting the press office of the Crimean prosecutor's office.
